FAQDo A+ Test Prep Tutors Teach Test-Taking Strategies and Tips

A Customized Approach // amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;img height="1" width="1" style="display:none" src="https://www.facebook.com/tr?id=254562404876341amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;ev=PageViewamp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;noscript=1" /amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; We often get asked what our tutors focus on in tutoring sessions. Watch the video and read on to learn more. A Customized Approach One of the main advantages of a one-to-one test prep program is that it is completely customizable. That means that there is not a set curriculum, and our tutor will work with your student to determine goals and areas of greatest need (e.g. content review, time management, the order in which to answer questions, etc.). At the start of the program, each student takes a diagnostic exam, which establishes a starting point. The tutor will review results with the student, set goals, and establish a plan for achieving the goals. If a student hasn’t taken upper-level science courses yet, an in-depth look at the ACT science section content may be necessary. Another student might need to review math content or how to craft a well-written essay. Other students may enter the program with a strong handle on the SAT or ACT content – but they need help coming up with their test-taking strategy. Our tutors are highly skilled in evaluating a student’s learning process and introducing tips that will help them approach the test with confidence. Recently, a student was struggling with time management on the reading section of the ACT. The tutor had him practiceby putting eight-and-a-half minutes on the clockfor each practice reading passage. If the student could complete each of the four reading passages in that amount of time, he would finish the reading section of the ACT under the time limit. â€Å"That really internalized the pace I had to read and do the questions at, which was extremely helpful,† the student said. Tutors also help students to work around the questions they don’t know, or how to make an educated guess. One student found himself being able to narrow down four answer choices to two – but then needed to make a 50/50 guess. â€Å"As we reviewed test answer keys and identified incorrect questions, we kept track of the type of questions he was getting wrong, while identifying strategies to approach those questions and pick the best answer,† A+ tutor Anson Han said. â€Å"By making him more cognizant of particular question types, he was better able to avoid making similar mistakes going forward.† Hopefully these anecdotes give you a better understanding of how our tutors will adapt to what your student needs, whether it is content review or test-taking strategies. With our one-to-one test prep method, we at A+ are committed to helping your child reach his or her full potential.
